Amon Carter Museum

Web Design

This project involved the re-design of "The Carter's" online collection explorer, and was the second-phase of a larger website redesign.

My Role

I took over the project as the sole designer when it was time to redesign the online collection explorer. I was responsible for creating wireframes, expanding on existing visual design, and developing a system of filtering and taxonomy within the collection explorer.

Challenges

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, in Fort Worth, Texas needed a robust collection explorer that allowed the general public to explore and engage with the artworks, while also functioning as a tool for researchers and museum employees.

Solutions

We built a collection explorer which features a clean, navigable, interface that is inviting for the casual visitor, but includes a robust, intuitive taxonomy, filtering, and flexible narrative system that allows curators to find works and organize the collection easily.

Key Features

Robust filtering system
Object detail pages
Artist pages
Collection "Themes" groupings

Collection Explorer Filtering

Users have the ability to filter collection objects and/or archive objects by date, collection, object type, and format. This functionality was designed to serve the needs of the general public, who is browsing the collection, as well as museum employees with more specific collection navigation needs.

Selected filter criteria is surfaced outside of the filter drawer. Users can sort the results, and specify results to match any or all filter criteria.

Object Detail Page

The object detail page functions largely as a pathway to additional content across the collection. Features like collection links, taxonomy tags, and related artwork and archives are designed to encourage exploration throughout the collection.

Themes and Artist Tabs

Aside from the main collection landing tab "all works," we also designed a "Themes" tab and an "Artists" tab.

The "themes" tab allows the curatorial team to aggregate pieces of the collection into a "theme," with supportive narrative content.

The "Artists" tab allows users to view artist pages that feature narrative content and respective artworks from the collection.
